Supervisors & Examiners

This section is written for teaching staff who run the thesis process end-to-end — creating topics, reviewing applications, running interview rounds, supervising running theses, and (as an examiner) issuing the final grade.

Where to start

  • Read the Supervisor & Examiner Guide for the full walkthrough. The two roles are covered together, with Examiner-only actions clearly marked.
  • The Permissions page has the full role-by-role permission matrix for the thesis page and research group actions.
  • The Workflows page has visual flowcharts of the application and thesis-writing processes.

Terminology

The UI uses two staff role labels:

  • Supervisor — day-to-day advisor of a thesis. Creates topics, reviews applications, gives feedback on proposal and thesis.
  • Examiner — the responsible professor. Can do everything a Supervisor can do, and additionally sets the final grade and completes the thesis.

Behind the scenes the Keycloak groups are still called advisor (= Supervisor) and supervisor (= Examiner) for historical reasons — this only matters if you look at log files or configuration.
